depending on your circumstances when you’re mixing I’d say it’s probably a good idea to do a bit of both. whatever you choose, playing the games should really help you learn the sound of your headphones/speakers faster than you ever would have imagined possible!
First I practiced with my headphones. I have open-back headphones. the practice went really bad. Now I switched to speakers and I can do the game about if the sounds are located right or left, waaaayyy better. I think that is based on the type of headphones I have. Im learning day by day ! :)
Speaker monitors are best because they are better with stereo field analysis but obviously headphones are the cheaper alternative. If you're serious about audio engineering whether if its for business or for fun, I'd highly recommend getting some good speaker monitors
