do you guys practice on here with studio headphones or monitors or both? I'm trying to figure which is going to help me get better at hearing certain sounds and frequencies when mixing. when I watch videos on mixing, an engineer may say like "you hear how the transients not coming through its sound choked". but to me, I don't exactly hear what they're saying (btw that's just one example). so headphones, monitors, or both?

I use both Headphones and monitors when practicing here. To make matters worse, I move from my dad to my my moms place every other week, so i have to different setups with different brands and models of monitors. This often gets very frustrating, because i have just enough time to get used to the frequency response of the speakers and the room, and then that gets totally thrown out the window.
I use headphones when i wanna practice late at night without waking my family up.
I feel like it's a bit easier to really focus on the details when i'm using headphones, but much harder to hear the stereo spectrum accurately.

100% agreed regarding the stereo imaging: I'm currently using closed AKG headphones, and identifying the position of the sound is a nightmare (closing my eyes sometimes helps a bit). Even with budget computer speakers the task is easier, IMHO.

Depends on the game for me. With anything involving frequency, details of sound (distorted reality, etc.) I use my monitors because I want to get very good at listening on them, and because they tend to give me more detail. For anything involving stereo imaging, including Reverb Wizard, I'm way better on headphones.
If your room is not properly treated, using monitors may vastly change your perception and lead to incorrect answers, so make sure your room sounds good first

I'm fantastic at stereo imaging with my headphones, not quite as good with my monitors. I'm better at hearing dynamics (Compression & Volume) on my monitors, and better with details (Mix recreation and distortion detection) with my headphones. Frequency detection seems about equal, but then I consistantly use the same monitors and headphones.

I believe it's important to concentrate doing all the games on your primary pair of monitoring you use for mixing.
Just for consistency, you know.
Of course, one would be better with some games than the other, but considering all the quirks and advantages of your monitoring systems is just another step for you to make more informative decisions in your mixing.
Things that you don't hear yet is mostly because you haven't had enough experience on certain things(or the inconsistencies of your monitoring). I always approach music and tech decisions based on how they feel and what emotion they give. I hope these could guide you how you'd choose your monitoring 😁

I use about 6 headphone is rotation - It is kind of an additional challenge. Just like always doing some different excersise so it is not always the same muscles you are working on :)

i am using speakers like 98% of the time, and only use my headphones to check my mixes. This way i can train my brain to get used to how professional Tracks sound inside my room and therefore i can make better mixing and editing decisions

i also think that is best to sometimes change your "training environment" as every room/speaker-combination features different aspects (frequency, time, resolution of room etc.). Headphones are great, but you get exactly the same response, no matter where you are. And for me, as i do 95 % of the actual mixing on speakers, i find to train on (good) speakers more useful.

i use both honestly. You never know what kind of situation you'll be in. Why not sharpen both swords ya know?

Beethoven here. I train by holding a tuning fork between my head and one of my studio monitors. I'm currently on level 500+ of all games except PanMan. :-)
