Anyone got tips on fixing my compression deafness? I think I just need to practice more, but I can't tell the difference between 4:1, 2:1, and 8:1.

I think, that's the best video about hearing compression. Nobody speaks about release the way Gregory does. (And it should be added as one of the learn videos definitely).
From my perspective, when you play Dr. Compressor you have very fast attack and release. That means, that you've should listen to sustain of the source. When you have congas, the more compressed one will last WAY longer (you not only hear the hit of the surface, but what happens right after that hit).
Don't worry, watch this video (and listen to the groove), take a break, come back tomorrow. It's a practice that needs a lot of time! Good Luck
