Hey there ! So i got kind of bored and thought why not filming my Ableton session. I wanted to do something on youtube for a while now so i just thought i get the ball rolling. I love to watch other people on youtube and pick up some tricks here and there. Maybe you find it informative. If you have any idea how i could potentially develop this further let me know! Also i would love to hear if you have any tips! PS it feels a little weird knowing that what are doing is recorded so i think the first videos will suffer a little bit but regardless.. Cheers
I might watch this later. I find it interesting to see what other people do. I flicked through quickly and you seem to use the built-ins a lot more than me. When I'm producing, I'm running amok with FabFilter and lots of external plugins.
Having some commentary would be great, but I expect that some people might find it annoying if they just want to watch. Would it be possible to add commentary in a way that enables YouTube to allow the user to turn it on or off. Or, I guess you could ship TWO videos, one with, and one without, commentary.
What's the benefit of using SoundToys Effect Rack over just stacking the SoundToys up in the Ableton track plugin chain? Is it so you can save the rack for later? Or is there some signal benefit or something?
One thing I do with production videos is use the YouTube preview feature where you can run the mouse along the track and see the still image flicker and look for plugin windows popping up! If I see a plugin I haven't got, I stop and take a look. So one approach would be to provide commentary whenever you open a plugin, just saying what the plugin is and what you like to use it for and what you're using it for now.
@Ross Williams thank you for your comments! The Ableton compressor eq and reverb and utility is what i use on most channels, partly because i can type it in and add them real quickly without even thinking about it to much and partly they don't eat up to much cpu. Also they most of the time get the job done. But i will say when I'm in mixing mode i will go external plugins more often for sure. Yes i agree about the commentary thing. I will add some in the future. Im still not sure what format i will end up doing. Creating these long videos is asking for to much time of the viewer i guess. On the other hand i hardly ever find genuine videos where someone just starts to produce with nothing prepared. The risk of creating something that might suck is quite high but i think it's so valuable to see what workflow someone else has established. Perhaps i could do the long format + cut it into a “match highlight” video with added commentary. The thing is when I'm producing and I'm fully concentrating on it I'm not really in the mind-space to comment on it. But maybe thats something i can train myself in. I used OBS to record screen and audio. It was quite a hustle to set it up because you have to mess with your mac audio settings. If you are interested i can write you a message how i went about doing it exactly. The benefit of the sound-toys rack is that it is currently free to use till end of June;) I don't have the Soundtoys bundle just yet. As soon as i have figured out where i wanna go with this i will surely add some voice over ;)
