My favorite videos in this series are the Mixing with Mike ones, especially the video (link below) where he discussed the concept of mix mapping. I’ve found using this for helpful for critical listening/ mix planning. Much better than the unorganized scribbles on scrap paper that I used to use.
So I’m sharing this link to download a template (xlsx & pdf) I’ve created (as inspired by the video) for anyone to download and use/modify to suit their needs
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/4p56fhg1zmaewl2/AABdw-ZAJl4HwmAC6WXeXNCua?dl=0

For my version, I added details for Song tile, Lead vocal name, key (B), bpm (110) arrangement (Intro, V1, C, V2, C, B×2, C, E, Outro) and a few spots for notes, etc.

Notes at the bottom of the page I mostly use for details like, Intro: keys & acoustic guitar, verse 2 background vocal 2 leads, vocal fills by BV 3 , electric guitar solo into bridge, trash can/train wreck outro. Anyways, hope you like it; hope you can use it, etc. 😉 Cheers! All the best for 2022!

Great videos from Mike.

Maybe I misunderstood, but I noticed that he says that you need to take the vibe from the reference tracks, but you can't compare the frequency range.

At the same time, many producers use reference plugins in their job, in particular REFERENCE from Mastering The Mix, which allows you to compare not only the frequency range but also the stereo range and even the level of compression of various frequency ranges.

There are also other tools that allow you to surgically examine reference tracks and use them to match the reference material with your own in production and mixing.

What do you think about this?

I use a lot analyzers as well listen to any reference track... I trust ears.. but watch out the analyzer... to check any peaks that might me overseen.. and I also use tonal balance from Izotope... I create an eqcurve from a reference track .. but I dont go crazy with it... I just normally pay attention to what I hear... and all curves and analyzers are just a second check.... but... trust your ears...
