The Case for a Dirtier Mix: Why Digital Silence Sounds Cheap
Quick one to try before you close your session tonight: solo the quietest two seconds of your current mix and turn it up loud. What's actually living in there?

If the answer is dead silence, a flat zero, that's usually the tell that a track was built entirely in the box. Real rooms never go that quiet, and that low-level noise was doing real work: keeping the record feeling like one continuous space, giving you distance cues, keeping the vocal present between lines instead of vanishing and reappearing.

New post breaks down exactly where the cleanup habits (gates, stripped silence, heavy de-noising) go too far, and how to put the life back on purpose without just adding hiss for vibe. Worth a read if you've ever wondered why your mix feels thinner than the reference track.

Interesting idea - will give it a whirl on the live studio recording I am currently mixing.

applied it to my mix and it added a subtle glue/continuity to it.

I have been absolutely bogged down by needing the perfect mix, though I'm learning to welcome the imperfections. This article just gave me the permission to add it back in!

I think this is one of the reasons I hate most (repeat MOST!) modern records. Edited to death - so perfect they suck - often delegitimize what would otherwise be a soulful artist performance

Great article. Studio One allows you to add cross-talk to mixes. I also like to add a tiny bit of noise. I also find that early reflection only reverb that simulates a small room and mixed at no more than 3% max on a master can give a song glue and feels like it's living in a space. I expect you all knew this anyway so I'll stop with the dumb mansplaining!😅
