I am a bedroom producer + singer and I’m working on my first album ever, It’s for a modern electronic music / RNB album. What mics do you think I should buy just to try out at home and what mic pre amp should I get?
At the moment I can’t afford buying a mic for 10k like the ultimate pro mics, but maybe you could recommend me a few around 1k, 2k or 3k?
Let me know if you think I should add any mic’s to my list or take any of them away. Maybe the Telefunken TF39 or Warm Audio WA-251 should take another mic’s place?
And what mic pre amp should I get? I was thinking of using the Heritage Audio Successor as a mic pre amp for testing the mic’s, but maybe you have a better idea? I know these classic Tube Tech etc. sounds amazing but I’m not there yet financially.
If you have recorded with one of these mics or with a mic+pre amp that you think should be on my list then please post a link so I can check out how it sounds on your recording.
Personally I'm not a fan of Warm audio product. I tried many of their pre amp and mics and they all subpar. I rather use apollo built in pre with any well known 100-400$ condenser mic. Neuman U87 Ai was the something I could finally felt like oh so this is what they call Great Mic. But even that is quite luxury option. I'd save for any other gears. Most likely like high spec laptop etc
Oh I've never tried Slate digital's digital modeling Mic but that might be the good option!! I tried UA Sphere LX and I was pretty satisfy yet I felt money does't justify. Then I read comment that MixBus TV said Slate one is as good as UA one but almost half price.
Just my experience though of course. Hope it helps! Best!
how is the acoustic in the room you gonna record the vocals? in a bad sounding room, no expensive mic or preamp will save you from a bad sounding recording. Invest first on acoustics (if needed) and dont use any shield around the mic, they only cause unnecessary early reflections and may cause comb filter effect. In a good sounding room, I would go for Neumann.... TLM models have no Output Transformator ( TrafoLoses Mikrofon), thats why they are smaller and lighter... they deliver a good sound though and you find many comparisons videos on youtube. But if you can afford U87AI... go for it... you'll never regret it. And a neve 1073LB in a Lunch Box format will round it up... Golden Age has a fantastic recreation of Neve....
Cheap condensor mics will make.your vocal sound bright ... you might think that's a good sound... but you will have to fight with Ss and harshness... even more on heavily compressed vocals.
You can also buy an RME Audio Interface... they have fantastic Preamps, fantastic Converters and very famous low latency interfaces... so you have all in one and dont need any external preamp.
Thank you guys for your answers, recording with mic and doing it myself and not in a studio is so new to me I didn't even know what a mic preamp was, been looking at a lot of compressors and got confused what is what. At the moment I don't have acoustic treatment or anything but I will get all of this. @Ki Shi and @Ruud Reiher did you guys ever try the Neumann Mt 48 interface? Basically, my voice is not the best, so I need the type of preamp and mic that will make my voice sound better than it is hehe, got any suggestions? Have also had my eyes on the Lauten Eden mic. I realised btw. that I love recording my voice dry on certain songs while hearing my voice with different types of reverb in the headphones, so maybe a Apollo could be nice for that? Does the Neumann U87 Ai cut through good in the mix? Isn't it too flat? Or maybe it takes EQ really well?
