The Black Russian`s – You Better Shoot Me

Each month we shine the spotlight on a SoundGym member by reviewing one of their releases for our Music Spot feature. This month we focus on 'You Better Shoot Me' by The Black Russian's.

The band features SoundGym Hero Anthony Chognard on bass and guitars alongside Flo(Void)Curatt on vocals and Jordan Kiefer on drums. The three members are split across three cities on two continents, with Chognard being based in France and the other two members in Canada.

Chognard, who also produces, is hugely influenced by the '90s Nu-Metal scene; Deftones, Korn and Slipknot all loom large as inspirations here. 'You Better Shoot Me' is a full-throttle blaster of a track, and it is of huge credit to Chognard's production that despite the furious speed of the riffing, the sound remains tightly controlled and sonically heavy throughout.

Production tricks such as ring-modulated vocals and sonic cut-ups add to the whole, creating interesting additional layers and augmenting, rather than distracting from the forward thrust of the song. The brutal verses give way to a soar-away melodic chorus that is truly memorable.

If you want to hear more from The Black Russian's you can dig into their back catalogue on Spotify, and follow them on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. You can also learn more about Chognard's production on the website of his artist collective, CHS Prod
