Hi all, sorry if this has been asked before, this is my first post here and I’m relatively new to the wonderful worlds of SoundGym and ToneGym.

In the games, why, when we get an answer wrong, do we go _backwards_??

E.g. you’re on, say Stage 10/12. Get it wrong, you go back to Stage 9/12! So you need to _redo_ a stage you’ve already passed, _as well as_ the next stage that you just failed. We’re kinda double-billed.

Why is that? It’s weird, and seems quite unfair.

Thanks in advance :)

So you can push over the obstacle of getting it wrong. It reinforces muscle memory by making sure you make less mistakes.

I would assume because the goal of these games is not to amass points or level up, but to increase skill.

If you are failing Stage 10, it is very possible that a lucky guess got you past the previous stage. If luck was not a factor, then you will easily pass Stage 9 again, and be back at Stage 10 for a proper challenge.

@John Gillespie put it well. The rules are fair, you just need to accept them as they are.

Hi! I'm also quite new, but my guess for that was that this way you cannot get through the last level(s) just by firing away your remaining lives with random guesses.

Thanks everyone, appreciate the replies!

I have mixed feels about this app design decision, and am very curious about how others feel about it, plus was hoping to see a reply here from the devs ;) I was actually also wondering whether it is a bug or intentionally implemented that way. I’m a software engineer in RL, so am just intrigued on that front.

It doesn’t change my experience here though, I love it so much. And I understand the explanations given, they do make sense, so thanks again all :)

I like Eric's explanation - definitely a motivator to 'try harder' or 'listen better' but I also think that it discourages advancing by lucky guesses.

They are also keeping track of the areas where you are weak and strong, down to the frequency bands, and I feel like this is also a data set that is more accurately collected by 'discouraging' random guesses.

Most of those exercises, the answer is 50/50. So I think of it as a statistical offset. Did you really get the last one correct? or did you just pick the right answer by chance?

Something my music teachers growing up insisted on is that it isn't enough to be able to get something right, it's to get something right consistently. You can't just play the scale right once, you've gotta be able to play it right several times in a row! It's the same principle here.
