Despite my complete understanding of the signal processing... Sometimes I find it challenging also...

Record a sound yourself or download a stem and play with it a lot with any compressor that came with your DAW. Take your time... Because this things take time!

It is definitely subtle. There was a good article/blog on here to give some sense of what to listen for.

If it clips very hard, it's obvious distorted; if it clips very tiny, it could be treated as a kind of 'compression'.

if you can easily pick it's distorted reality, if you can't it's 'compression reality'.

My struggle is that sometimes there is a substantial difference in volume making it very difficult to make an objective decision.
