Hey, guys! I was wondering, do you think about your motive when you create music? There is so much dark music out there, be it lyrics or beats that suggest into that. Lately I feel paralyzed to create new music because I don't want to tap into that subconscious pipe. And it happens without realising. I was wondering If you are aware of that? Or maybe you like dark music? Or do you make effort to create music that would drive you listeners closer to God?
Ya, I get that totally. As we are currently finding out how fricken Satanic the industry has been. I would say, fight the good fight and show us the way. Be the light!!!!!
Wasnt expecting the last part about driving listeners closer to God... 😄
but you are correct - driving listeners closer to God- that is the only legit motive for one to create any music at all... and this will be the ultimate source of energy which will never stop flowing... 💪 so congrats on figuring that out 🏆
Additionaly, what do you define as 'dark' music? is it indeed ment as something 'devilish' or is it more of a 'depresing' dark?
i guess music is the representation of our current era and society all together... and im sure, we all have to agree that society is getting darker and darker day by day... huge amount of crime and demoralization 🤦♂️
can you show us something what recenty caught your eye as being dark or even opposite - songs you do like which are not dark 🤷♂️
@lauris I’m in the process of searching for new music and re establishing my taste in music. But I think it will be a very small niche. You can call it devilish or dark it’s the same. Take any song from popular music nowadays, it will sing about fornication, shooting someone in the face, glorification of money, witchcraft (Taylor Swift) etc. Not like I was ever into popular music but it’s everywhere. In gym, cafes, on streets. Even most of the popular music from 60ies and onward is just channeled by dark. I highly recommend you watch the movie “They sold their souls for rock’n’roll” by Joe Schimmel. Opened my eyes.
Aga I'm so glad you posted this because this has been all I've thought about for a long long time.
I've been crushed by how much the music industry is accepting darker/evil/depressing things to talk about in music. It really discouraged me from making music for a while.
But that's kinda how I came onto SoundGym because I realized how important it is if you have a vision message purpose from God and it's through music, you have to make it come to life as best as you can.
People who are talking about these darker things have the platform and the sound quality to do so. If we want to hear more music that is positive and uplifting we must build the same for us.
Producers, engineers musicians who all are not with the messaging of today's music have got to keep improving and creating things that allow people to hear something different, something more positive.
What genres have you looked into? I'm literally going through the same thing myself where I haven't been listening to as much music because of messaging. So far I've liked Ambient beats like breakcore and dnb for just chilling and house and jersey club music for instrumentals to write on. Still thinking there's much more to hear, but let me know!
@json Right now I can only listen to some instrumental music, some classical music and worship songs for God. I actually love worship songs for God. I myself am more into making instrumental music so I think over time I will figure everything out. Just need time to decompress. :)
Human nature is a microcosm of all nature, and nature is a balance of darkness and light. One can't exist without the other. Light is meaningless without darkness. If you accept that the darkness is necessary, you will be more comfortable in the world and you will understand it better. If you always try to fight the darkness, you will lose. Plain and simple.
Good evening Aga =) Thanks for the post ^-^ its very nice thoughts and beautiful call from the soul! Don't hesitate to draw inspiration again and again from all the beauties and wonders that calls to you, maybe it's time to discover what you really love =) (and classical music is a wonderful example) Happy time! 🌈🌈🌈
@dylan Actually, its the other way around. You will win, if you fight the darkness. Many people get discouraged when they read things like that what you wrote because they don’t know and don’t read the word of God which is Bible.
Singing about joy is an exercise that we have heard less in the music industry, agree...Fear, melancholy and sadness are certainly more selling and there is also this emotional process which pushes us to re-consume music more quickly, i think ... Harmony considers the two poles (negative/positive). Expressing this and making a synthesis of it is right, fair (a therapy). The question is the sale of those frequencies and the influence that this could have on listeners. making music is being present, presence is praise to God. Your thoughts are a pleasure to hear.
@Aga I: And how is that fighting working out for you when you write things like Lately I feel paralyzed to create new music because I don't want to tap into that subconscious pipe in your posts? My post isn't about becoming the darkness, it's about not fighting. Accept that it exists and get on with what you want to do. Be the light if you want, just don't live under the illusion that you are a superhero who needs to save the world. If you are always fighting and worrying about the darkness, it will continue to overwhelm you. Didn't Christ say forgive them for they know not what they do even while he was being crucified? He understood the value of letting it go.
@Dylan That is my fighting- not becoming darkness, not giving in. And that is hard. It’s hard enough to not even bother with illusions of saving the world. I can barely do my part. But I love Christ, in him I find strength to keep going.
One can approach it differently, the world is neutral, we color it into bad or good, so it's just a matter of choice, so with the music, one can choose what to make and what to listen for, positive, negative, neutral and so on.
Aga, it's hard to separate who you really are from the music you produce. If it really comes from your heart, and your motive, intention is to glorify God, it will come through like a light in the darkness!
I'm personally an atheist, but I have admiration for religion, and its artistic themes and values which are by no means exclusively happy and cheerful and neither is the bible. Some people make music to express and understand themselves and how they feel. Experiencing darkness is a part of being alive in the world, and not all music is meant to be prescriptive. If someone wants to make music to bring people closer to god thats cool and all but the idea that its the only legitimate motive for creating music is wild and the implication that all dark or depressing music is inherently at odds with the bible is odd. Have you ever heard the blues? Its literally called the blues. If you listen to Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday, how do you feel? How do you think she felt? Music is so much more than only joy, and if there is a god, he intended it to be that way.
I didn't read through all comments, but this sounds like something great to write a song about: 'I was wondering, do you think about your motive when you create music? There is so much dark music out there, be it lyrics or beats that suggest into that. Lately I feel paralyzed to create new music because I don't want to tap into that subconscious pipe. And it happens without realising [...].'
I know it doesn't really answer your question, but writing music often brings me closer to the answer.
@will I used to love blues in my teen years. I would go to the store and spend all my pocket money to buy some delta blues cd. I loved listening to Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson etc. But then I grew older and started paying attention to the lyrics: adultery, woodoo witchcraft, selling soul to the devil. Listen to any song from them like one of the most famous “Got my mojo working”. He is singing about witchcraft. And the same with the next generation of artists which I loved like Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Jethro Tull etc. how can anyone in the sane mind knowing all this keep listening to such music? Or expose their children to such music. Of course God created everything the light and the darkness and human nature is complex we are inclined to darkness just because it’s so much more easier to just succumb to our lowest animalistic nature. But there is other way. We can strive to light and God. I don’t mean like everything must be joyful frequency, but instead of singing about a scarlet woman that seduced a married man in nightclub you can sing a praise to your wife thus enhancing family values. Just an example, Justin Timberlake’s latest song “no Angels” came to mind... watch the video :D and that’s what they’re pushing. Anyway, all I’m saying, if you don’t have spiritual discernment you are doomed.
@will just watch the movie They sold their souls for Rock'n'Roll. It explains everything so much better. There is a 3 hour version and 10 hour version. And you can watch it for free on Good Fight Ministries website.
