Hey everyone 👋 (Yohai from the SoundGym team here).
It’s looked a bit quiet, but we’ve been busy under the hood, fixing little things, tightening the flow, and sketching bigger moves for your journey on SoundGym.
Before we roll anything out, I’d love your take:
👉What’s the SoundGym feature or game helped you most? 👉 What feels clunky or slows you down? 👉If you could add (or improve) one feature tomorrow, what would it be?
Your feedback shapes what we build. Big ideas, small tweaks, and harsh feedback, everything’s welcome. Thank you for training with us and helping to push SoundGym forward. 🙏
👉 daily workout 👉 myself 👉 it about 'Charts' 1 player in charts should be pin in top or bottom of the page, and be visible independed of scrolling of the page. it will be more usefull 2 there extrimely neded playlists. if one like some song, he can add it in oun playlist, and allways have access to all songs on SG he like.
Otherwise, how and where one should to look for a song that he liked a month ago?
it will be good have posibility to have several playlists (by genre... or some others excogitation) playllists can be heve options 'privat' and 'public' so that, if desired, participants could exchange them in personal chats or in public topics.
I think this will have a positive impact on activity in this section of the site
you ask for a one feature, but I can't stop 😁 I would like to offer you a proposal to improve the game Kit Cut. I have two: 1 Add to a set of training sounds sample of pink noise 2 Add the option of choosing which sample we will hear the first 'original' or 'changed' (now it allways 'changed'). it will give the leader’s workshop with the only ONE press and the only ONE swich from the original sound to the sound with substructed frequencies. Without back switch! without switching from sound with substructed frequencies to the original sound (which turns the exercise for subtract into an exercise for adding. this is not we need)
The most useful turned out to be compression and equalization games - because they force you to listen and adjust the device! It would be great to make more variations of such games. And if you're really creative, you can recreate the guitar's tone by moving virtual microphones around the amplifier=) But the most important thing is to do some error correction work - the system is already analyzing which exercises and frequencies I make mistakes in more often. I want a combined exercise that will take into account my weaknesses^^ Thank you for your hard work!
I think it is nice to have a wide variety of games that help with different areas! Eq and Compression have been a game changer for me since it is very hard for people (at least it was to me) to actually learn them just by listening to music or playing around with actual compressors and eqs.
My main problem is that I usually get distracted with life around me and forget to do my trainings x) but that's obviously a me problem!!
If I could add something tomorrow it would be games more mastering specific specially for compression and saturation or something like that. Maybe I am saying this since I am currently on a mastering learning curve and feel a little bit stuck in the listening part!
Also, maybe it is asking for WAY TOO much but developing a standalone app and adding games for atmos would be sick!! Just speaking my mind out on this one to be honest heheh
I am excited to see what is coming to us, I'm pretty sure it will be great!
Hey! There is a small bug that occurs fairly often on EQ Mirror where if you adjust a parameter by drag and dropping up and down in the parameter settings instead of adjusting a node on the graphical display then when you switch back to hear what you are trying to Mirror and then back again to your settings the EQ settings you adjusted have reverted back to the default. This is primarily and issue with the Q settings because I only adjust those parameters in the band settings at the bottom of the screen and it will take 2 or 3 times of switching for my adjustments to stick. I hope that made sense please let me know if I can help in anyway. Thank you!
Hey there, Yohai. If you could add small fades to top-&-tail the pure tone samples used in Feedback Eliminator, it would stop them popping my monitors. Would really appreciate that, thanks.
John Gardner remined me about EQ Mirror... if I were writing my first post now - I called it most helpd feature... maybe and it realy can be improved. as it john said. and if it posible to add control of parameter with mouse wheell... it'll be cool... point under cursor : freaquency \ gain \ q wheell \ wheell+ctrl \ wheell+shift
1: EQ cheetah, Peak master, Kit Cut, Compressionist and feedback Elimitator are Gold! The Olympics also help a lot by adding pressure and competition!
2: 2.1: It would be great to have a new badge above Diamond! This would really help users to keep advancing beyond 1,500,000 SPI! How about a “Black Diamond” after exceeding 3,000,000 SPI, for example?
2.2: Charts and Beatrace could improve their approach.
3: 3.1: The possibility of learning compression with samples other than drums or percussion! Adding games to listen to compression in vocals, guitars, and other possibilities would be very helpful.
3.2: Some game to practice and learn to recognize phase problems would be great!
What feature of game helped me the most? I find all he games helpful.
What feels clunky or slows you down? There has been an issue with the Reverb game on Chrome (Windows 11 Pro) where it stalls between tracks and sometimes just doesn't load. My work around is that I do the Reverb game using FireFox, so it is specific to Chrome. I tried to troubleshoot it with your support, but they wanted so much detail and video that I'm just not willing to take the time to provide them.
If you could add (or improve) one feature tomorrow, what would it be? I would love it if there was more context or teaching moments to these games. For example, if I pick the wrong compression setting out of the 2 choices on one of the compression games, why? I'd love to be able to listen to the samples after the fact so that I can learn what to listen for and have some tips or even see how the settings differ right on the game screen. This will definitely help accelerate learning and cut down on some of the frustration.
One more thing, I agree with having new badges past Diamond, but how about some between Gold and Diamond? Because that gap is a huge slog, lol....
What’s the SoundGym feature or game helped you most?
Definitely Compressionist, EQ Cheetah and the other EQ games.
What feels clunky or slows you down?
Navigation is not always the best. Certain features are buried behind menus that aren't always easy to find. For instance, changing the course you're in is buried in an unintuitive place, as are Beatrace games (which I think might be part of why it isn't always easy to find them. I don't see this as a major issue though.
If you could add (or improve) one feature tomorrow, what would it be?
3 big ones:
For me, and I suspect I'm not the only one, after having a deep understanding of compression and EQ, the next big rubicon to cross is understanding saturation and distortion. Yes, we have the one distortion game and it's useful but I think distortion/saturation has almost as much nuance to parse as EQ or compression. I would love to see a selection of games pertaining to distortion/saturation like maybe a game that has us identify different distortion TYPES (like tube saturation vs. transformer vs. tape, etc.) or a game that called on us to identify whether even or odd; lower or higher order harmonics are being added to a sound. Maybe even something that could help us learn to hear aliasing.
In a similar vein, having another reverb game or two would be very welcome as well. Perhaps one were we're called to dial in certain parameters like decay, density, Early vs. Late Reflections (al la Compressionist and EQ Match) or one that calls on us to identify different Reverb TYPES (like Plate vs. Room vs. Ambient vs. Spring, etc.)
The final one would be to have the olympics/contests have classes rather than having us all in one big pot competing against each other. Even with as much as I've improved my ear, the people that compete (not even win, but compete) for prizes in those contests are so beyond my capabilities (or really, any capability I'm likely to develop), that I've just been put off from participating altogether. It might be a silly thing, but you guys know as well as anyone that gamifying a process can really increase the benefits of it for the user, but if you don't have the slightest hope of competing effectively, let alone winning, you're just more likely to tune out altogether.
hey! 1. compressionist, peak master, reverb wizard 2. - 3. that might sound a bit mental, but mb it would be fun to be able to train on your own sounds. for me as for recording musician at least.
Hey Yohai, thanks for checking in! The EQ and compressionist games have been most useful for me because I am actually making the adjustments rather than just picking the best one.
I can't remember where I saw this, but someone on here suggested that games progress a little more sequentially. The example they gave is when you start feedback eliminator, you only have to differentiate between 100 Hz, 1k and 10k. Then when you progress to the next level you get 500 Hz, and so on so that you're really training your ears on specific frequencies and getting to know them well before you progress. I really like that idea, and I like it for other games. For example, in filter expert, maybe you start only by differentiating between LPF and HPF, and then progressively add more/start adding in different frequency ranges.
Additionally, I've noticed a pop in the reverb game when you switch to the one that is different, and it allows you to cheat. Unfortunately it's not something that can be ignored so it does become a hindrance to learning.
For a change. I would like the adjust the make up gain/volume fader in Compressionist to go away. For me it doesn't really help in the point of the exercise.
1) Most helpful, generally EQ based games. I joined back in Jan 2020, before the welcome addition of EQ Mirror & Feedback Eliminator :) I find all the games have an elegant simplicity that make them well suited for their purpose !
2) Clunky or slows you down, have a more robust way to track your posts and search posts in the various spaces (SoundGymCafe, SoundGym Official, Feedback & Requests, etc)
3) If you could add (or improve), fix EQ Knight (per DM to Yohai Zilber). Also, for Compressionist, seems like it’s impossible to exactly match the level with gain slider (not enough resolution?) I find it much more of an issue in the higher levels when the choices include all the ratios, attack & release options.
Wish list item, bring back the Duels contests (in some form, if not exactly the same as before)
Thanks for creating a fun and engaging platform for training and learning! Cheers!
1. The memory balance game is stupid, and even though you can disable it, it still affects SPI. If I wanted to play memory games, I'd join a different site. I joined here for audio. Doesn't help whatsoever - needs a redesign. Shouldn't be about memory and especially not translating memory into arbitrary DB readouts.
2. EQ cheetah is a really cool concept but I'd like the workout picker to prioritise putting other EQ games before it as it needs warming up for, and I'm not keen on spending time in the practice mode when a simple workout reorder would work better.
3. More importantly, we need wayyy better sounds especially for EQ cheetah. When so many of the kick sounds, for example, already have so many audio problems and over-pronounced frequencies, it's frustrating to play a rapid fire game like EQ cheetah where there should technically be multiple 'correct' answers as to which frequency is over-boosted (and there's not enough time to A/B which bad frequency was added vs what just sounds bad). Simple fix is getting professional studio quality sounds that don't already contain resonances/problems in the audio. Most sounds in here are a gimmick. Full songs should be mastering reference-grade, not DIY home studio jingles. Otherwise not fit for ear training
4. A lot of games are easy to 'cheat' on: the distortion game often doesn't level match properly, the feedback game tends to train interval recognition more than cleanly picking frequencies from a blank slate, reverb game you can just listen for audio clicks as you switch through ABC etc. Also, some games are way easier if you just choose the same easy sound each time
5. Some sounds take forever to loop which is so annoying for some games, should ideally be able to make it loop faster. otherwise the games feel like they're wasting my time.
6. A mastering game using only mastering grade reference tracks would be fantastic: where you have to 'correct' the added/removed problematic frequencies in a song via an EQ which get progressively more and more subtle until you're essentially doing +-0.5db EQ moves at the really high levels. No A/B for this one - it's about training your ear to know what 'normal' should sound like. This would be amazing. Caveats are that you would need to have truly mastering reference-grade music (or be able to use your own), and that SoundGym would need to disclose the reduction in volume so we can account for it and keep our monitoring at reference level.
Otherwise. everything else is surprisingly fantastic and you've done a great job!
Hello I've been using sound gym since 2018 and one thing that helped me stay consistent is to do workouts on my phone. The EQ Mirror game is really good but I would love it if it was compatible with the mobile layout.
First thing that comes to mind, on EQ games (KitCut, Peak Master, EQ Bass detective, etc) we need to be able to check our errors like on the other games (usually done with the C shortcut to compare answers) also on practice mode in this games, you cannot adjust the Q so if i want to listen to for example 200Hz with a very tight Q on practice mode i just get this broad Q that doesnt really help, also we should be able to choose what sounds we want to practice instead of it being random.
Hey. I had a long break from Soundgym and what I found really helpful when I got back - the option to go 10 levels back. I was looking for a button to reset progress to start from scratch, because even with 10 levels back some games are still quite challenging to get back to. I'd also love to see that feature on Beatrace daily exercises as well because I've been stuck on the same level since I got back and I find myself just skipping that workout whatsoever.
Moreover, some of the new games sometimes consume a lot of time and there are days when I don't want to spend that much time on a daily practice. So I start with the first 3 games diligently and end up clicking whatever buttons in the last 2 games just to finish faster. So maybe it could be a good idea to shorten the daily exercise? E.g. you can claim X coins after you do 3 exercises, but if you do 2 more, you'll get Y coins. So it gives an option to choose to either do a quick workout or if I truly have and want to spend time, I could choose to do a longer version.
I really love Olympics, but the same 3 rotating games got a bit repetitive (even though I still love participating). I would really love seeing something fresh added there. Not necessarily game-wise, but it could be differences in range (I've noticed to some extent, but nothing crazy), sounds that haven't been heard before, maybe do some with white noise/ pink noise).
Have you also considered adding streaks? Like you have to play once a day to extend streak. And then display current streak and longest streak among stats in profile? I'm sure not everyone would care for the feature, but I've been playing some games daily JUST to extend the streak. In SG I'll maybe log in 3 times a week if I feel up for it.
All in all, thanks for creating and maintaining this great platform and for asking for our opinion how to make it better!
Hey I would love to have a mode where individual elements like kick or bass are compressed in a mix to understand the context of elements in the mix better. Would be super helpful for compression as it nice to learn compression on a group but in a mix often I have to adjust just one thing.
As a beginner in music production, I miss some guidance. It would be super helpful if some (if not all games) had a video of what to listen for, and what each setting means. For example, a video explaning how to hear what ratio a compressor is set or how agressive it is. That way, you know what to listen for, rather than just guess. Hope that helps.
Hello! Just wanted to quickly suggest a feature I would find super helpful ^_^ On Distorted Reality, I always get stuck on stage 9/12. But I can't really practice stage 9.... I can only fail on stage 9 and begin the game again. It would be awesome if there was a way I could practice the exact stage I keep getting stuck, rather than having to progress through the easier stages again in order to gain access to max 3 attempts at that stage. Thank you!
So, something that bugs me a bit is how I cant do something like just 'purchase' more sound coins, in order to add more song to use during games. I feel like there should be more, or simpler ways to get sound coins.
Im just getting tired of using the same sounds over and over xD, and would happily spend a few bucks for more options. Thanks!
Hey - thanks for asking the community for feedback. I am looking forward to what you have planned! Im sure this would take tons of time to scope out and plan an integration but I would love a game where you would have two sounds playing simultaneously and you would need to use volume and or EQ to shape one or both of the sounds to make them fit better together or reach a certain clarity threshold.
For me, something that I think would significantly speed up learning is this:
I'd love to be able to go back and rehear the last question on many of the games.
e.g. I'm playing Peak Master and incorrectly identify where the peak is - I want to go back and hear the sound again, knowing the answer, so I can try to associate what I'm hearing with that adjusted area.
I'm achieving it, over time, but it's slower and more cumbersome that it needs to be.
When I finish a game I would like the training sounds to be the same as the time if I had specified a sound, so I have the same sounds automatically if i play again. So I don't have to click it each time.
A back button on the training page would also be useful.
I would like to suggest that compression exercises be done with instruments other than drums. Also have the compression on the drums in a song or band context. One final suggestion of compression exercises on a mix bus
- helped most - the 'C' key that helps you review questions you got wrong (any game that has 2-3 choices) - slows down - I feel I would like more ways in which to review mistakes (SG knows weak areas, so could I make a custom exercise to review frequencies/compression settings I get wrong in EQ Cheetah, Dr. Compressor, DB King combined with the song that was playing at the time I got it wrong. - add improve - change levels to earlier levels to review/practice without having to work back to current level (it would remember your current level). I feel like I haven't wanted to change the level to review because it was so difficult getting to where I am, but I feel like I don't want to let it go. Something to go hand in hand with this would be in game hints appropriate for the level you are struggling with.
I really dislike how the choices are often different volumes. When I'm listening for which is compressed or distorted more, I would much prefer the choices be the same volume levels. I get that the idea is to listen for the difference in the affected sound and not a volume difference, but some of these games are a struggle enough without factoring in a volume difference.
@Yohai Zilber I would love for some more time-based drills. For example, Delay Control is great and all but it would be great to have a version of that game that had the delay on one channel. So we're hearing left delayed and right not delayed. Then I could help my students start learning how to hear the Haas effect. Also rather than just guessing which track has the same reverb as another, being able to practice recognizing the reverb time and the pre-delay time. These are both examples that were in the original David Moulton Golden Ears discs and I really miss that.
Hello, 1) i would really like some new songs, but more in a classical genre (like choir, orchestra, jazz for example). 2) Also in the compression games it would be nice to have more than just drums. Like vocals, guitar, bass, or whole songs. 3) I like feedback eliminator but i would love it when it will have every frequency and not just the 1/3 octave band. Because you always tend to hear musical notes (octaves, thirds, diminished 5ths. etc.) 4) Some game on saturation would be nice. :)
Thanks so much for all the feedback everyone! We’re reviewing every comment and will be using this input to shape upcoming improvements. Really appreciate you all for helping us push SoundGym forward.
HI! If i could add one feature to soundgym it would definitely be the vocals on compression games (or maybe some other sounds too like guitars or brass)
Guys, it would be absolutely PHENOMENAL :)) if we could use EQ Mirror to practice on VOCALS and Guitars (Acoustic and Electric). But especially on Vocals, this would be such an epiphany for so many people who struggle to EQ a vocal track well in their sessions. Please consider it and please make it happen, this would be like a revolution because vox are the star of the show in probably 90% of people's productions. And I also up what Michal wrote about adding more instruments/vocals to the compressionist game. Thank you!
SoundGym is pretty amazing as it is right now. I guess my suggestions would be:
1) The help button @Mikko Patama posted here 2) All games should have a way to compare right and wrong choices after you make your move. This function should be really obvious for the user and available in both scenarios, when you get it right and when you get it wrong. This alone would make learning so much more efficient. 3) All games should have keyboard shortcuts. The help to see the shortcuts should be obvious for the user. These shortcuts should be standarized (when possible) accross games.
Thanks so much for asking and congrats on this awesome space you're running !
If the Q and E buttons worked as the left and right arrows do, that would be awesome and easy to implement.
I would also like to be able to compare my choices as Gaspar mentions. Perticullarly for games like kit cut, where I sometimes try not to use the arrow keys because my brain turns it into Freq boost.
Something simple like switching between: Q/left arrow - OFF, W/down arrow - your answer, E/right arrow - ON
Might be clunky, but it could be a feature to have a review on/off, where it pauses at the end of each round for you to compare, or just to move forward.
👉 What’s the SoundGym feature or game helped you most? the EQ and compression games 👉 What feels clunky or slows you down? It would be nice if the compressionist had keyboard mappings - specifically if the LR arrows would select between the compressed signal and the one we are trying to match. Maybe have up down mapped to the gain knob, or mouse wheel. That would make that game much more efficient, and make it similar to the EQ Cut/boost games to flip between signals. It is also super clunky in the daily training entering a game, then starting it. It would be great if there were a hot key (preferably the same) for those, or if the buttons were in the same spot so no mouse movement were necessary. 👉If you could add (or improve) one feature tomorrow, what would it be? I would improve the UI on EQ MIrror to aling a bit better with how eq plugins work. Select a point (stays selected until new point is selected or hovering over control for other point) and mouse wheel for Q. Have mouse wheel rotate knobs when mouse hovers over them. It would also be super useful if the keyboard shortcuts were accessible when in game, not just before it.
A good feature would be to list the top 3 high scores for each game within the game selection screen. This makes it more efficient to find where games are lacking in score.
EQ on/off needs a better hotkey. When I do EQ cheetah, my left hand is on the space bar and my right hand is using the mouse to select frequencies. It’s difficult to use my right hand to press the arrow keys to toggle EQ on/off for A/B test.
Hi, guys, it's 2026 and we definitely need a change in or introduction of new Vocal loops to practice with in EQ Mirror/Peak Master (especially) etc. This shouldn't be a hassle at all but I really hope that you'd take it to heart and give us something FRESH and of good quality we can practice on and enjoy. Vocal loops of different genres would be perfect but even if they are mixed genres - still great. New songs would also be amazing, new live Drum loops and percussions for Compressionist and I believe it'd be AWESOME if you introduce Synths for Compressionist, we can practice compressing plucks and more attacky type of synth sounds there too. Those 3 things are really needed and I mean no disrespect, only the best for the community!
Hey, I'd love to have the possibility to focus on a frequency range (instead of training 60Hz-20kHz I would love to train specifically in the 200 Hz - 900 Hz Region)
This has already been mentioned, but I would love for the examples in the compression and distortion games to be level-matched, that way I can just focus on the tonal quality of the sounds that I’m trying to compare. That being said, I think it would be a fun option to check a box at the start to turn on the option to have the examples NOT be level-matched to make the game harder.
Maybe it already exists somewhere and I'm just missing it, but a 'you have this many SPI to go before [level, bronze, silver, gold, etc]'. would be nice. Recommendations on what to think about and practice based on performance in any given game would also be cool.
It’s almost impossible to do the stereo spread exercise from my iPhone- the sliders never make it to the outside when there’s an extreme spread, and often change direction while I’m sliding them.
I've gained the most from the EQ games, but I'm best at those and struggle with the others a lot. The games I struggle with are massively important for my progression as a sound guy, so thank you for those. I know that two of the games never show up in my daily workout. I'd appreciate getting those as a treat sometimes. EQ Cheetah has been buggy for me. It often doesn't register clicks or cursor moves. Also, the site sometimes just freezes on me and I loose my progress. Very frustrating on a day where I'm tracking for a new record.
As a film post person, I find it would be very useful to practice EQ games with poorly recorded dialogue. It will be great to be able to upload our files to play with.
HI. I have a bug in compressionist on my iphone. I often practice with my airpods as it's one of my references I use pretty frequently, when I try to move the makeup gain fader, it's impossible to move with any degree of accuracy.
What would help me a lot is a game that can help me to hear reverb better. I know there are some reverb time games. I'm not even sure what kind of game as I have the most difficult time hearing and mixing reverb. Often times what sounds cool to me in one moment, a day or 2 later sounds hokey and bad. Or in my studio it sounds one way and in the car and earbuds different. I've been at this mixing nonsense for years and I still can't seem to make sense of reverbs and how to blend. A game that could help with that would be wonderful, whatever it may look like.
I'd like to add that the MOST frustrating thing is when you get to a certain level the options are much like splitting hairs (very micro differences) that just aren't useful in the real world with not being able to actually SEE the setting differences after. I'm leaning towards spending more time in other ear training systems that will give me more of a benefit instead of just: it's wrong, it's wrong, it's wrong, it's wrong with absolutely NO reasoning as to why. I have downgraded back to free for this reason.
